Is Dating and Love Marriage Allowed in Islam?

‘Love‘ in English, ‘Mu’habbat’ or ‘Unsiyat’ in Urdu, ‘Hubb’ in Arabic, ‘Prem’ in Hindi, ‘Amor’ in Spanish, ‘Pag-ibig’ in Filipino, ‘L’amour’ in French, ‘Dragoste’ in Romaninan, ‘Liebe’ in German, ‘Cinta’ in Indonesian and Malay, and ‘Ask’ in Turkish and there are many more languages on the globe which speaks ‘love’.

When the word ‘Love’ is mentioned, our soul feels refreshed, energetic and quivers. The moment we start enjoying the sweet smell, emotions, memories and an attachment. The word ‘Lover’ when pronounced, raises the human soul to the sky, starts dancing in the purified water, climbing onto the clouds with the beloved. Our forefathers said: “Whoever tastes love knows it’s value.“

There is a majority of the portion of humans who still believes in this age of materialism who construe lover with the bed. They have forgotten that there are more types of love other than this materialism and satisfaction of body instead.

The Love of ALLAH, The Love of HIS Messenger and Our Beloved Prophet SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam, the love between husband and wife, the love of sons and daughters, the love of brothers and sisters and ultimately love for the sake of ALLAH Zille Shanahu. Which is above all indeed.

The new generations and the teens have lost the sense of modesty and decency. Instead, they chase after the prohibited love that leads to adultery, either in brothels or in open space like the profligate generations nowadays.

We have forgotten the traditions (ahadith) of Our Beloved Prophet SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam which states about love for the sake of ALLAH Subhanahu Wata ‘Ala. Why our youth has forgotten the meaning of true love.

I wish If I could heal this disease, widely spread across our societies. How our Muslim brothers can recoup their lost purity.

What is Love?

Love is a feeling of the heart, an intuition; through which the hearts of two lovers infatuate and relate each other emotionally. Love is a deep-rooted into human nature. It is a requisite part of human behavior. Furthermore, Islam has classified love into three types:

1. High Rank of Love- According to The Noble Qur’an Chapter Surah At-Taubah Verse Number 24, High ranking love is the love of ALLAH.
2. Middle Rank of Love- The love of family, relatives brethren, the spouses, and kinsmen.
3. Low Rank of Love- To prefer the love of family and kinsmen above the love of ALLAH, HIS Messenger SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam and fighting in his way.

Love is the most significant incentive populating the world, a motivation to develop the civilization and glorifying ALLAH. Hence, without love, there would be no aim and activity which can run this world.

Believer who Prefer the Love of Jihad above his family, children and trade

The true believer is the one who prefers the love of ALLAH above his family, children, and trade. ALLAH created us to bring people out from idol worship, to worship ALLAH Ta’ala. A transformation from the narrow worldly life to the wide infinite hereafter (Akhirah), from the injustice of earlier religions to the religion of Islam.

Jihad, a righteous way to ALLAH

When the king of Egypt Muqawqas frightened and tempted ‘Ubadah Ibn-as Samit, who is the leader of the Muslim delegation with money, ‘Ubadah replied:

“O Muqawqas do not be conceited, nor your soldiers, as we do not fear you, nor the soldiers of Rome. We are waiting for one of the two fairest rewards: either victory and spoils or martyrdom in the way of ALLAH.”

The Noble Quran declares in Surah Baqarah Verse Number 249 that, “How often a small group overcame a mighty host by ALLAH’s Leave?”

“O Muqawqas we do not care about our family and homeland. our only care is to die in the way of ALLAH and raise the banner of Islam. As, for your allegation that we live in severe poverty, we are very rich. if we could have the whole world, we would not ask for more than what we have.”

‘Uzri or Chaste Love?

‘Uzri love is a chaste and purifying love occurring between the two sexes. It is in contrast with lustful and sensual love that includes obscene behavior. Resultantly, ‘Uzri love is fascinated by the characteristics of the beloved, not by physical attributes. The rewards behind such love is ALLAH’s pleasure. It complies with the concepts of Islam. So the chaste believers, who failed to marry have expressed their failure and talked about it in different ways.

All Lovers Chaste?

Kuthaiyer-‘Azza, Jamil Buthaina, Qais Lubna, Majnoon-Laila, and Salaamat al-Qass chaste in their relationship with their beloved. The answer is ‘No’.

They refrained from ‘Uzri love. They enter brothels to talk with their beloved out of the doors and meet alone in-person. Either in private lonely places in their husband’d home, or in any solitary locations. As a result, they may have committed Adultery (Zina).

According to Surah An-Noor Verse Number 30-31

“It is not lawful for a man and a woman to meet in lonely place. ALLAH’s Messenger SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam has said, Whoever believes in ALLAH and the Last Day must never be in privacy with a woman without there being a mahrem (of hers) with her, for otherwise Satan will be the third person (with them)”

What these Lovers has said?

If we read the biography of these lovers we will discover that their personalities are afflicted with imbalance and defects. They have committed and spoken obscene languages. For instance: Qais defines in his poems that:

I pass through Laila’s house to kiss her house’s wall,

This is not because I love the house, but because who lives in the house- Laila

Majnoon’s companion said in a poem about Majnoon,

When Majnoon saw a dog in the desert, He treated him with kindness.

People blamed him then asked: Why are you kind to the dog? He replied, do not blame me, for I saw him once in Laila’s square.

Outcome

The feelings and emotions of these former lovers supplemented Arabic literature, poetry, prose, eloquence, and rhetoric. However, if we compare their contribution they added to the literature, we will find that their evil affects outweigh their positive contributions. If they exchanged their obscene poems for poems about ALLAH and HIS Messenger SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam, struggling in ALLAH’s way, satire of HIS enemies, praising companions, and dignity, they would more effective enriched Arabic Literature in the acquiescence of Islam.

Islam with it’s generosity and realism doesn’t forbid poetry but it does forbid obscene poetry. The obscene poetry which praises or ridicules someone, describes the charms and physical beauty of women, obscene words of love to women that excite, urge, and motivate lust.

In Surah Ash Shu’araa Verse # 224- 227 ALLAH says,

“Except those who believe (in the oneness of ALLAH)- Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds and remember ALLAH much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged (by replying back in poetry to the unjust poetry).”

The Prophet Mu’hammad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam says,

“ALLAH has excluded you because you are true in your belief, sincere in your actions, and defend Islam with your poems.”

Islam teaches us that whosoever loved a woman and could not marry her should try to forget her. If he could not he should conduct a path of purification and chastity, so that he may find a way out, a solution of the problems of his life. And if he is unable to solve, and remained chaste until he died, he would be like a martyr because he remained chaste and conceal his love and remained patiently through out his life till his death. Al-Hakim Ibn ‘Asakir Referred from a Hadith.

In conclusion poetry and singing is permissible if they are free from obscene words, languages, description of entire Haram activities like wine and bar flirting of men and women. Islam permits women to sing a love song at weddings if they do not intermingle with men, if there is no prohibited musical instruments present. If the poetry or song is accompanied by the prohibited musical instruments, it becomes prohibited even if the song or poetry is religious.

Love For The Sake of ALLAH

• Those who have mutual love for The Sake of ALLAH will live in light and their faces will resemble light.

Abu Da’ood reported that The Prophet Mu’hammad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam says,

“Among ALLAH’s servants there is a group who are neither prophets nor martyrs. The Prophets and martyrs will envy them on The Day of Judgement because they hold a high rank in paradise.”

The companions asked Him,

“Who are they?”

He replied,

“They are people who loved each other for the sake of ALLAH only. They are not relatives nor is there any business between them. By ALLAH, their faces resemble light and they live in light. They do not fear when people fear and are happy when people are unhappy.”

• They will be under the shade of ALLAH when there is no other shade but HIS. Muslim reported that, The Prophet Mu’hammad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam says,

“Verily, ALLAH will say on The Day of Judgement: Where are those who have mutual love for MY Glory’s sake? Today I shall shelter them in MY Shade when there is no other shade but MINE.”

Bukhari and Muslim reported that, The Prophet Mu’hammad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam says,

“Two persons, who love and meet each other and depart from each other for The Sake of ALLAH.”

Their sins will be forgiven. At-Tabarani reported that The Prophet Mu’hammad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam says, “If two Muslims meet and help each other, their sins will be forigiven.”

Let us all love each other for The Sake of ALLAH!
