Firstly, let us have a look on a general time table of Namaz. This has been adapted globally on the basis of the local area and moon citations. The time may differ from country to country.
There are five obligatory prayers Which is also known as Panj Waqt Salaat or Five Times Prayers in Islam. For every Muslim it is compulsory to offer these five times obligatory prayers.
Chronologically, these are:
- Early Morning obligatory or Fajr
- Afternoon prayers or Zuhar
- Late afternoon prayers or Asr
- Twilight, late evening prayers or Maghrib
- Night Obligatory prayers or ‘Isha

- Way of Offering Namaz in Chronological Order?
- Morning Prayers or Fajr- Start with 2 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, and then 2 Rakah Farz. Total 4 Rakah.
- Afternoon Prayers or Zuhar- Start with 4 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, then 4 Rakah Farz, then 2 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, and then 2 Rakah Nifl. Total 12 Rakah.
- Late Afternoon Prayes or Asr- Start with 4 Rakah Sunnat Ghair-Taqidi, and then 4 Rakah Farz. Total 8 Rakah.
- Twilight Prayes or Maghrib- Start with 3 Rakah Farz, then 2 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, and then 2 Rakah Nifl. Total 7 Rakah.
- Night Prayers or ‘Isha-Start with 4 Rakah Sunnat Ghair- Taqidi, then 4 Farz, then 2 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, 2 Nifl, then 3 Witr Wajib, 2 Rakah Nifl. Total 17 Rakah.
- Friday Special Prayer or Jumu’ah- Start with 4 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, then 2 Rakah Farz, then 4 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, then 2 Rakah Sunnat Taqidi, and then 2 Rakah Nifl. Total 14 Rakah.
- What is Taqidi and Ghair Taqidi Sunnat? Also known as Sunnat Mu’akkadah
Praying these are non-emphasised sunnah. Praying them is best and will be rewarded Insha ALLAH Azzawajal but it is permissible to leave it. Praying 4 Rak’ah before ‘Isha is not reported from hadith, is only an analogy. If you are going to offer this salat there will be no sin at all.
One should pray all Sunnah Mu’akkadah. Leaving them permanently would be a fault and not good. ALLAH Azzawajal grant us guidance to pray at our level best and with 100% devotion.
How to Make an Intentions to Offer Namaz?
- Sunnat Mu’akkadah
I am making an intention to offer 2 Rakah or 4 Rakah Sunnat Mu’akkadah for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, ALLAHU Akbar. In this prayer there is no need to say ‘at what time’ you are praying this Rakah.
- Sunnat Ghair Mu’akkadah
I am making an intention to offer 2 Rakah Sunnat Ghair-Mu’akkadah for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, ALLAHU Akbar. In this prayer also there is no need to say ‘at what time’ you are praying this Rakah.
- Nifl or Optional Prayers
I am making an intention 2 Rakah for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, ALLAHU Akbar. In this prayer also there is no need to say ‘at what time’ you are praying this Rakah.
How to Make an Intentions to Pray for Farz Namaz, Wajib Namaz and Taraweeh Namaz?

- Afternoon Obligatory Prayers or Zuhar Salat- I am making an intention for 4 Rakah salat farz or obligatory prayers at the time of Zuhar for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, ALLAHU Akbar. If you are offering behind an Imam then you have to say ‘behind this Imam’ also.

- Friday Special Prayers or Jumu’ah Salat- I am making an intention for 2 Rakah salat farz or obligatory prayers at the time of Jumu’ah for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, behind this Imam. ALLAHU Akbar.
- Ramadan Night Prayers or Taraweeh Salat- I am making an intention for 2 Rakah Salat Sunnat Taraweeh for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, ALLAHU Akbar. If you are offering behind an Imam then you have to say ‘behind this Imam’ also.
- ‘Eid-ul-Fitr Special Prayers or ‘Eid-Ul-Fitr Salat- I am making an intention for 2 Rakah Salat ‘Eid-ul-Fitr Wajib offering with six more Taqbeer for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, behind this Imam. ALLAHU Akbar.
- ‘Eid-ul-Azha Special Prayers or’Eid-Ul-Azha Salat- I am making an intention for 2 Rakah Salat ‘Eid-ul-Azha Wajib offering with six more Taqbeer for ALLAH Ta’ala facing towards Kaaba, behind this Imam. ALLAHU Akbar.

Sunnatein Aur Nawafil Ka Bayan
Kuch sunnatein muakkida hai ke shariat mein is par taqeed ayi hai. Baghair uzr ek bar bhi chhore to malaamat ka haqdar hoga. Aur agar chhorne ki adat bana li to faasiq, mardudushshahaadat, mustahiqenar. Kuch ayima ne farmaya ke wo gumrah thehraya jayega aur gunehgar hai agarche uska gunah wajib ke chhorne se kam hai.
Yalweeh mein hai ke uska chhorna haram ke qareeb hai. Aur uska wala haqdar hai ke muazallah. Shafa’at se mahroom ho jaye ke Huzoor-e-Aqdas SallALLAHU ‘Alayhe Wasallam ne farmaya jo meri sunnat ko chhorega use meri shafa’at na milegi. Sunnat-e-muaqqidah ko sunanul huda bhi kehte hai. Dusri qism ghair muaqqidah hai jisko sunanuzzwaid bhi kehte hai. Ispar shari’at mein taqeed nahi ayi hai. Kabhi isko mustahab aur mandoob bhi kehte hai. Aur nifl aam hai ki sunnat par bhi uska ittlaaq aya hai. Aur uske ghair ko bhi nifl kehte hai. See Wedding Night in Islam here.
Yahi wajah hai ki fuqaha-e-kiram babul nawafil mein sunne ka bhi zikr karte hai ke nifl unko bhi shamil hai. Lihaza nifl ke jitne ahkam bayan honge wo sunnaton ko bhi shamil honge. Albatta agar sunnaton ke liye koi khas bat hogi to us par mutaaliq hukm se usko alag kiya jayega jahan…..usi mutaalliq hukm nifl mein shamil samjheein.
Masala 1, Sunnat-e-Muakkadah namaz ye hai:
- 2 raq’at namaz fajr se pahle
- 4 raq’at namaz zohar se pahle
- 2 raq’at namaz maghrib ke bad
- 2 raq’at namaz insha ke bad
- 4 raq’at namaz jumu’ah se pahle, 4 jumu’ah ke bad (Jumu’ah ke roz)
Jjumu’ah parhne wale chaudah (14) raq’atein hai aur jumu’ah ke ilava baqi dino mein har roz barah (12) raq’atein hai.
- Masala 2, afzal ye hai ke jumu’ah ke bad char parhe fir do (2). Dono Hadeeso par par amal ho jaye.
- Masala 3, Jo sunnatein char (4) raq’atein hai maslan jumu’ah aur zohar ki chaaro raq’atein ek salam se parhi jayegi. Yani chaaro parhkar chauthi ke bad salam ferna. Esa na ho ke 2-2 raq’atein parhkar salam fer rahe hai. Esi surat mein ada na hui. yuhi agar chaar (4) raq’at ki mannat mangi aur 2-2 raq’at karke chaar parhi to mannat na huyi balki ek salam ke saath chaaro raq’at parhe. Durr-e-Mukhtar Wagerah
- Masala 4, Sab sunnaton me witr (taqatwar) farz ki sunnatein hai. Yahan tak ki kuch usko wajib kehte hai aur usko jayaz hone ka, agar koi inkar kare to agar shubah hai ya jahaalat ki wajah se hai to kaafir hone ka khauf hai. Aur agar janbujhkar baghair shubah ho to ese aadmi ko kaafir kaha jayega. Isi liye in sunnaton ko baghari ujr na beth kar parhe na sawari par aur na hi chalti gaadi par. Inka hukm in baaton mein bilkul wajib ki tarah hai. Inke bad fir maghrib ki sunnatein hai. Fir zohar ke bad, fir insha ke bad, fir zohar se pahle ki sunnatein hai. Aur zyadah sahi ye hai ki fajr ki sunnaton ke bad zohar ki pahli sunnaton ka martaba hai. Ki Hadeesh shareef mein khas inke bare mein farmaya jo inhe chhorega use meri shafa’at nahi panhuchegi.
Agar koi esa alim hai ki use fatwa dene mein sunnatein parhne ka mauqa nahi milta to farz ke ilava baqi sunnatein chhor sakta hai ki us waqt agar mauqa nahi hai to maukuf rakhe. Agar waqt ke ander mauqa mile parhle warna maaf hai. Aur farz ki sunnatein is halat mein bhi nahi chhor sakta.
Farz ki namaz qaza ho gayi aur zawal se pahle parhli to sunnatein bhi parhe warna nahi. Aur farz ke ilava aur sunnatein qaza ho gayi to unki qaza nahi, do raq’at nif parhe aur khayal tha ki farz tulu’ nahi huibad mein malum hua hua ki tulu’ ho chuki thi to wah raq’atein farz ki sunnaton ke qayam maqam ho jayegi.
Aur chaar (4) raq’at niyat bandhi aur unme pichli do (2) farz ke tulu’ hone ke bad hui to ye farz ki sunnaton ke qayam muqam na hogi.
Farz tulu’ hone se pahle farz ki sunnatein jayaz nahi. Aur tulu’ hone mein shaq ho jab bhi najayaz aur tulu’ hone ke saath shuru ki to jayaz hai.
Zohar ya jumu’ah ki pahle ki sunnatein chhut gayi hai. Yahan tak ki farz namaz ada kar li hai to agar waqt baqi hai to farz ke bad parhe. Afzal to ye hai ki pichhli sunnatein ada karne ke bad hi aage ki namaz parhe. Farz ki sunnatein qaza ho gayi aur farz parh li hai ab sunnat ki qaza nahi ha Imam Mu’hammad farmate hai aftab ke nikalne ke bad parhle to behtar hai aur isse pahle bilkul mana hai.
Ajkal ye dekhne mein aya hai ke log farz namaz ke fauran bad farz ki sunnat parhte hai jo najyaz hai. Aftab buland hone ke bad zawal se pahle parhe. Aftab tulu’ hone se pahle farz ki sunnat qaza parhne ke liye ye hila karna ke shuru karke tod de fir ada kare ye najayaz hai.
Agar farz ki sunnat parh li hai aur farz qaza ho jaye to qaza parhne mein sunnat ka lautna zaruri nahi. Akele ne farz parh liye jab bhi sunnaton ka chhorna jayaz nahi hai. Farz ki sunnaaton ki pahli raq’at mein Alhamdu ke bad Surah Kafiroon aur dusri mein Qul Huwallaah parhna sunnat hai. Jama’at qayam hone ke bad kisi nifl ka shuru karna jayaz nahi siway farz ki sunnaton ke.
Agar ye jane ki sunnat parhne ke bad jama’at mil jayegi agarche qaydah hi mein shamil hoga to sunnat parhle. Magar saff ke barabar parhna jayaz nahi balqi apne ghar parhe. Ya masjid ke bahir koi jagah hai agar to waha parhe. Aur agar ye bhi mumkin na ho to ander ke hisse mein jama’at hoti ho to bahir ke hisse mein parhe. Bahar ke hisse mein ho to ander ke hisse mein parhe. Aur masjid mein agar ander bahir do darje na ho to sutoon ya ped ki aad mein parhe. Ki isme aur saff mein koi cheez hayil ho jaye. Ajkal log aksar iska bilkul khayal nahi karte aur usi saff mein ghus kar shuru kar dete hai. Ye najayaz hai. Aur agar jama’at shuru nahi hui to jahan chahe sunnatein shuru kare. Chahe koi sunnat. Magar janta ho ki jama’at jald qayam hone wali hai aur ye us waqt tak sunnaton se farigh na hoga to esi jagah na parhe ki uski jagah se saf kat jaye.
Imam ko ruku’ mein paya aur ye malum nahi ke pahli raq’at ka ruku’ hai ya dusri ka to sunnat chhor de. Aur namaz mein shamil ho jayein. Agar waqt mein gunjayish ho aur us waqt nifl makrooh na ho to jitney nifl chahe parhein. Aur agar farz namaz ya jama’at baqi rahegi to nifl mein mashghool hona najayaz hai.
Namaz Ke Beech Batein Karna
Sunnat aur farz namazo ke beech baatein karne se zyadah sahi hai ke sunnat batil nahi hoti. Ha savab kam ho jata hai. Yahi hukm har us kam ka hai jo takbeer-e-tahreema ke manaafi hai.
Agar kharid farokht ya khane mein mashghool hua to wapas laut ayein. Ha agar bad wali sunnaton mein khana laya gaya aur khana bigadne ka khatra hai to khana kha le fir sunnat parhe.
Magar waqt nikalne ka khatra ho to parhne ke bad khayein. Aur baghair majburi bad wali sunnaton ki bhi taakheer makrooh hai. Agarche ada ho jayegi. See What is Dua? here.

Sunnatein Muakkadah Namaz ka Sahi aur Durust Tarika
Insha aur asr ke pahle neeez insha ke bad char-char raq’atein ek salam ke saath parhna mustahab hai. Aur ye bhi ikhtiyar hai ki insha ke bad do hi parhe. Mustahab ada ho jayega. Yuhi Zohar ke bad char raq’at parhna mustahab hai. Hadees shareef mein ata hai jisne Zohar se pahle char (4) aur bad mein char, par muhafizat (hamesha parhi) ki, ALLAH Ta’ala uspar aag haram farma dega- (Jaame Tirmdhi)
Allama Sayed Tahtavi farmate hai ki sire se aag mein dakhil hi na hoga aur uske gunah mita diye jayenge. Aur jo is par mutalbat (puchtaach) hai ALLAH Ta’ala uske fareeq ko razi kar dega. Ya ye matlab hai ki use ese kamon mein taufeeq dega jin par saza na ho- (Hashiya Atahataavi Al durril Mukhtaar)
Aur Allama shami farmate hai ki uske liye basharat hai ki uska khatma bhalayi par hoga aur wo dozakh mein na jayega- (Raddul Mohtaar)
Kisi ne sunnat ki mannat mani aur parhi, sunnat ada ho gayi. Yuhi agar shuru karke tod di, fir pari, jab bhi sunnat ada hogayi- (Durre Mukhtaar. Nafli namaz ki mannat mankar parhna baghair mannat ke parhne se behtar hai. Magar mannat kisi ke shart ke sath na ho jaise ki fala bimar sahi ho jayega to itni namaz parunga aur sunnaton mei, mannat na manna Afzal hai – (Raddul Mohtaar)
Maghrib ke bad chhah (6) raq’atein mustahab hai unko salatul awwabeen kahte hai chahe ek salam se sab parhe ya do se ya teen se aur teen salam se yani har do raq’ate par salam ferna Afzal hai. (Raddul Mohtaar, Durre Mukhtaar)
Zohar, Maghrib aur Insha ke bad jo mustahab hai usme sunnatein muakkadah dakhil hai jaise Zohar ke bad chaar parhi to muakkadah wa mustahab dono ada ho gayi aur yu bhi ho sakta hai ki muakkadah aur mustahab dono ko ek salam ke saath ada kare yani chaar raq’at par salam ferein- (Fathul Qadeer)
Insha se pahle ki chaar sunnatein jati rahi to unki qaza nahi. Fir bhi agar bad mein parega to nifl mustahab hai aur wo sunnat sunnatein mustahab jo chhoot gayi wo ada na hui (Durre Mukhtaar, Raddul Mohtaar). Din ke nifl mein ek salam ke sath chaar raq’at se zyadah aur rat mein aath raq’at se zyadah parhna makrooh hai aur Afzal ye hai ki din ho ya raat, chaar-chaar (4-4) raq’aton par salam ferein- (Durre Mukhtaar).
Jo sunnatein muakkadah chaar raq’ati hai uske qaydah oola mein sirf attahiyyaat parhe, agar bhool kar durood shareef parh liya to sajdah sahw kare. Aur in sunnaton mein jab teesre raq’at ke liye khada ho to subhanak aur aa’oozu na parhe aur inke ilava aur chaar raq’at wale nawafil ke qaydah ‘oola mein bhi durood shareef parhe aur teesre raq’at mein subhanak aur aa’oozu bhi parhe, is hsart ke sath ki do raq’at ke bad qaydah kiya ho warna pahla subhanak aur aa’oozu kafi hai.
Mannat ki namaz ke bhi qaydah ‘oola mein durood shareef parhe aur teesri mein sana aur ta-awwuz- (Durre Mukhtaar). Chaar raq’atein nifl parhe aur qaydah ‘oola mein fout hogaya balki janbujhkar bhi chhor diya to namaz batil na hui. Aur bhulkar teesri raq’at ke liye khada ho gaya to wapas na laute aur sajdah sahw kar le. Namaz kamil ada hogi. Agar teen raq’atein parhi par na betha to namaz fasid hogi. Agar do raq’at ki niyat bandhi thi aur qaydah kiye teesri ke liye khada hogaya to qaydah ki taraf laut aye warna namaz fasid ho jayegi- (Alamgiri).
Namaz mine qayaam lamba hona zyadah raq’atein parhne se Afzal hai yani jabki kisi waqt-e-mu’ayyan tak namaz parhna chahe jaise do raq’at mein itna waqt laga dena, chaar raq’at parhne se Afzal hai- (Durre Mukhtaar, Raddul Mohtaar). What is Nauchandi Jummera in Islam?
Nifli namaz ghar me hi parhna afzal hai magar:
- Taraweeh,
- Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid,
- Safar se wapsi par do nifl ki unko masjid mein parhna behtar hai,
- Ahram ki do raq’atein (meeqaat jahan se ahram bandha jata hai) ke nazdeek koi masjid ho to usmein parhna behtar hai,
- Tawaaf ki do raq’atein ki maqam-e-Ibraheemi ke pas parhe,
- Itikaf karne wale ke nawafil,
- Suraj gahan ki namaz masjid mein parhe,
- Agar ye khayal ho ki ghar ghar jakar kamo mein msahghool hone ki wajah se nifl chhoot jayengi ya ghar me dil na lagega aur khush’oo kam ho jayega to masjid mein hi parhe,
- Nifl ki har raq’at mein imam aur tanha parhne wale par qirat farz hai aur agar muktadi ho, agarche farz parhne wale ke peeche iktida ki hoto imam ki qirat uske liye bhi kafi hai us par khud parhna nahi- (Durre Mukhtaar, Raddul Mohtaar).
Nifl namaz qasdan shuru karne se wajid ho jati hai, ki agar tod dega to qaza parhni padegi. Aur agar qasdan shuru na kit hi jaise ye khayal tha ki farz parhna haiaur farz ki niyat se shuru kiya, fir yad aya ki farz parh chukka tha ab ye nifl hai, tod dene se qaza wajib nahi. Basharte ki yad ate hi tod de aur yad aane par is namaz ko parhna pasand kar liya to tod dene se qaza wajib hogi- (Durre Mukhtaar).
Agar baghair irada fasid ho gayi hai jab bhi qaza wajib hai jaise tayammum se namaz parh raha tha aur beech namaz ke paani par qaaadir hogaya. Yuhi nifl parhne mein aurat ko haiz agaya to qaza wajib ho gayi, pak hone ke bad uski qaza kare- (Durre Mukhtaar).
Shuru karne ke do tariqe hai:
- Ek ye ke tahreema bandhe
- Dusri ye ke teesri raq’at ke liye khada ho basharte ki shuru sahi ho. Aur agar shuru sahi na ho jaise ummi (anparh) ya aurat ke peeche iktida ki ya bewuzu napak kapdo mein shuru kardi to qaza wajib na hui. (Durre Mukhtaar, Alamgiri).
Farz parhne walo ke peeche nifl ki niyat se shuru ki fir yad aya ke ye farz mujhe parhna hai aur todkar isi farz ki niyat se iktida ki jo wo parh raha tha ya todkar dusre nifl ki niyat karke shamil hua to us nifl ki qaza wajib nahi. Tul’u aur ghuroob-e-aftab aur nirfunnhaar (Jab suraj bilkul sir par ho zawal se pahle) ke waqt namaz-e-nifl shuru ki to wajib hai kit od de aur makrooh waqt ke ilawa me qaza parhe. Aur dusre waqt-e-makrooh mein qaza parhi, jab bhi ho gayi, magar gunah hua. Aur puri kar li to ho gayi magar makrooh waqt mein parhne ka gunah hua. Aur baghari shara’I wajah ke nifl shuru karke tod dena haram hai- (Raddul Mohtaar wagerah).
Nifl namaz shur ki agarche chaar ki niyat bandhi jab bhi do hi raq’at shuru karne wala qarar diya jayega ki nifl ka har shuf’a (do raq’at) alhaida-alhaida namaz hai- (Alamgiri, Al Fataawal Hindiya).
